GMI involvement has been discussed at many different events and other settings. We have generated an overview of GMI in the media and put this on the GMI website for easy access. Please, continue communicating any initiatives and publications involving GMI to add to the list.

GMI was presented at the 10th International Meeting on Microbial Epidemiological Markers (IMMEM) October 2–5, 2013, at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, and included a round table discussion about GMI. René Hendriksen (DTU, Copenhagen, Denmark) presented a talk envisioning global surveillance in the genomic era, and presented bioinformatics web-based tools developed at Copenhagen's Center for Genomic Epidemiology (www.genomicepidemiology.org) to allow global epidemiology based on whole-genome sequencing.

John Rossen (University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands) followed on with his talk on the implementation of HTS in daily clinical practice, which will include identification of strains as well as drug resistance information, epidemiologically relevant information to find related isolates and information relevant to patient management.

Dag Harmsen (Universitätsklinikum Münster, Münster, Germany) stimulated discussion about the need to reach global consensus on the implementation of genomics for the diagnosis and surveillance of infectious diseases and invited meeting participants interested in shaping the future of genomics to join the Global Microbial Identifier (GMI) initiative.

A conference proceeding has been publish and is available at http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0923250814000138.

Thursday February 27, 2014,  Dr. Marc Allard (FDA, College Park, USA) gave a seminar at  University of Guelph, Canada, about ‘GenomeTrakr: a pilot source tracking network of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) desktop sequencers’, where GMI was also presented. The abstract is available at: http://ovc.uoguelph.ca/sites/default/files/users/ovcweb/files/Marc%20Allard%20Seminar%20Feb%202014%20PHAC.pdf

At the coming annual meeting of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP; August 3-6, Indiana Convention Center, Indianapolis, USA) Peter Gerner-Smith organizes a 3 hour ILSI sponsored symposium on whole genome sequencing for the in 2014 where GMI will be presented.
