International developments

The GMI set-up was presented by Mr. J. Schlundt and Mr. E. Brown during the “Applied Bioinformatics and Public Health Microbiology” conference in Cambridge UK, May 2013. During the discussion it was suggested to initiate a global competition for reasonable algorithms to be used in GMI characterization.

Future prospects of GMI in case of an ongoing outbreak investigation

Citizens in four Nordic countries suffer from hepatitis A virus infection assumed to originate from a common source. During the investigation of HAV strains from infected patients, the relevant national public health laboratories in the rest of Europe, US, Canada and Africa have been in close contact in order to compare circulating HAV strains, in a joined attempt to identify a common source and likely vehicle(s) of transmission.
Read about the outbreak at Eurosurveillance and ECDC-EFSA.

News from Working Group 4

WG 4 has drafted a combined questionnaire on proficiency testing aiming to survey the potential end-users, ranking the possible target organisms. The questionnaire is scheduled to be sent out to the GMI community in June, for completion in August 2013. At the upcoming conference “10th International Meeting on Microbial Epidemiological Markers (IMMEM-10)” a round table discussion has been scheduled on the GMI initiative.
